A Night With the Cast of Caprica

Cylons, Smoking, and Soap Opera. Here is straight from the cast of Caprica...
On a night when most of NYC was dressed in green and expecting the same of their beer, a small group of loyal and lucky scifi fans were seated at the Paley Center enjoying sneak peaks of new Caprica episodes and the opportunity to discuss them with executive producers and cast members. Although I can't give away any of the spoilers I saw in the next two upcoming episodes (not without risking Cylons at my door) I can say you really don't want to miss them. Friday, March 19th's show has some particularly dark scenes that are well worth watching and the following week's episode has so many twists, turns, and cliffhangers that you'll have to hang on to something to get through it. Now on to our chat...

Executive Producer David Eick compared the Aritficial Inteligence in Caprica to "the oil in a Dallas like world." Which just confirms that this is the "first scifi soap" as Co-creator and Exec. Producer Ronald Moore describes it. He also points out that this is a scifi series that doesn't live in outer space but is much more grounded.

David and Ron were asked if they've ever received any network flak over the religious or political content of the show. They both said it's been exactly the opposite. SyFy has never questioned the show's direction and that although they may argue over a great many details, the network and producers have always been on the same page when it comes to the core of the show.

When Mark Stern, Exec. VP of Development at SyFy was asked about the concept of making a BSG prequel he said they "didn't want to rip BSG off. (Caprica) is it's own animal." He went on to say that he enjoys how Caprica lacks any one "moral authority character."

Esai Morales who plays "Jospeh Adama" (and I must say is particularly handsome in person) agreed as he described his character as a "flawed guy living in a flawed world, trying to do the right thing. No one is evil all the time. No one is good all the time. In trying to save my daughter I ruin my son."

Sasha Roiz concurs that his character "Sam Adama", Joseph's brother actually "looks pretty good" because the world of Caprica "is so morally ambiguous." He also commented on how "Sam" sees his choices in black and white. He makes decisions and moves on where "Joseph" lives in the grey and ponders everything.

Alessandra Torresani says that in the next 9 episodes "the bitch is back" when it comes to her character Zoe. In one way or another "everyone has betrayed Zoe." She talked about filming the girl inside the robot scenes and how the rest of the cast and crew has to film the same scenes twice, once with her and once with a stick that fills in for the robot. Magda Apaowisz (Lacy) laughed about how funny it was to "hug the stick" in certain scenes.

When it came to casting sessions Magda talked about how nervous she gets during auditions and how she couldn't make her call back due to infected wisdom teeth and a swollen face. No need to be nervous. she got the part of Lacy anyway. Alessandra was up against a friend who was a huge BSG fan and Alessandrea was like "what's a cylon?"

David Eick was asked about the fear that maybe James Marsters would bring too much Spike (his former, very popular role from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) to his portrayal of Barnabus. David says "James inhabited Barnabus effortlessly. He's a completely different person in this show."

My favorite line of the night came from Ronald Moore. When some fans questioned the amount of smoking on the show and that it may appear as though they were glamorizing or advocating the habit Ron responded with "We kill people too but we're not advocating that." Lol. Great show.
